Izzie has been sick! First time.. for everything I guess.

Last Monday, February 1st, I came home from work and knew that we were going to have to take Izzie to the doctor. The day before she had started a little cough and had a low grade fever of about 99.6. Well, we took her to the doctor and the nurse came in and asked us about all of the signs and symptoms. I listed them out sort of as follows: loose bowels, coughing, running nose, sneezing, a little throwing up that could have been mistaken as reflux, and she was just so pathetic acting. Poor baby girl. The nurse weighed her with clothes on and she was 17lbs 10z. Izzie was wearing jeans and a sweater though! After a minute of waiting in the room, the nurse came back and swabbed her nose for RSV which Izzie was not happy about. You would have thought Izzie had been given a shot with all the screaming she did. Another two minutes later Dr. Guyton came in and said the test was positive. I just about started crying in the office. I felt like it was all my fault. I'm her mommy; I should have been able to keep her healthy especially since we have been exclusively breastfeeding for about 4 months! Anyways, on doctor's order, we didn't start any meds or breathing treatments since she had not started wheezing. We went and bought a humidifier, saline for her nose, vicks for babies, and some "boogie wipes." The doctor warned us that she was just going to get worse, since this was only the second day of symptoms. He said that normally RSV peaked around the fourth or fifth day.
Well, the doctor was right! On Thursday, we knew it was time to go back. I heard some wheezing (without my stethoscope- which I leave at work in my locker) and Izzie had started throwing up even more violently. Her fever had also reached 100.4 the night before. We went back right away. She was started on albuterol nebulizer treatments and amoxicillin (the pink nasty stuff we all have taken as children) for the two ear infections the doctor found. She did not like the first nebulizer treatment at all, but after that she was ok with it. She opens her mouth wide open. Todd and I think that she can taste it. The amoxicillin is another story. She absolutely despises it. She spits it out or throws it up. We finally have it down to a science now though. We lay her on the bathroom floor, so if she does spit we can wipe it up easier. We put a little in at a time in the side of her mouth and then blow on her face. For some reason, it makes her swallow. I don't know why, but it does. Izzie goes back tomorrow to the doctor for a check up to make she that things are looking better. Oh! The second time that we went back to the doctor, they weighed her again with her clothes on and she was 17lbs 3oz. I wish I knew her true weight. She must be around 17lbs even.
Izzie is almost back to her normal self. She is still a little stuffy, but she is smiley for most of the day. This makes her mama and daddy happy.

  1. poor little baby girl! that picture just breaks my heart! I'm glad she got used to the treatments and didn't fight them much after the first one-- that makes it a little easier on mama. :)
